New York City is increasingly becoming a destination of significant technological innovation and entrepreneurship. With Mayor Michael Bloomberg, one of the most successful tech innovators in New York history, at the helm of the city's government, tech industry has become a growing focus for startups.

The Bloomberg administration's most recent monthly business strategy workshop, which featured business leaders from throughout the tri-state area, involved substantial discussion about New York's emerging technology and social media industry. The overall determination was to promote the city as a hub of innovation, thereby attracting tech LLCs and corporations to form in New York.

Last week, the city announced the second annual Big Apps competition to promote continued tech sector growth. The competition calls for participants to build applications on top of 350 datasets provided by more than 40 agencies from around the city.

However, social media remains a difficult field to enter, with many agencies trying to determine how to best launch a social media platform for openly discussing city issues.

"I don’t think we can have it both ways. I don’t think we can create an open dialogue and try to protect ourselves from insult at the same time," deputy mayor for operations Stephen Goldsmith told VentureBeat. "I'm for an open dialogue, I’m not too worried about where the angry comments get registered.
