Entrepreneurs know that starting an LLC or corporation in New York City requires nonstop attention, devotion and passion. A sick day, for the owner or the lowest staff member, means a loss of productivity and, hence, a loss of much needed revenue, especially at the early junctures of a small business' development.
Recently, City Council Speaker Christine Quinn renounced an effort to mandate that all businesses in New York City be required to pay employees for sick days. Although Quinn had originally supported the initiative, she cited its potential impact on small businesses during the current economic climate as the primary reason for her opposition.
"Providing sick leave to working New Yorkers is truly a noble goal, and supporters of this bill have the best intentions," said Ms. Quinn, who is a potential candidate for mayor in 2013. "But now is simply not the right time for a measure that threatens the survival of small businesses."
Most business groups also oppose the measure, including the Business Council of New York State as well as New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg, who was quoted as saying the imperative would be "disastrous" for the city.
