The temptation to jump into the world of social media marketing immediately after creating a California LLC shouldn't mean forgoing a comprehensive plan.

Whether it's a Facebook page, Twitter or other location-based applications, social media should be one part of an extensive marketing strategy, according to Fox's Small Business Center.

"Social media shouldn’t be your only marketing tool, nor is it a stand-alone solution," says marketing consultant Gail Martin. "For best results, your social media should reinforce the messages and offers you provide through your website, traditional PR, direct mail and other marketing tools."

Social media can require lots of time and effort. Having a solid plan will help avoid spreading a marketing team too thin.

Patience is key to success. Experts recommend using social media as a conversation - not just an advertisement - and letting well-intentioned advice and dialogue lead customers to a business naturally.

It can take as many as six months to develop a solid following on social media sites before a business will begin to see tangible results, according to Mark Hayward at Twitip.com. He also says that using a photo of a real owner or employee at a business can help to build trust.
