Berkeley, California-based wind turbine manufacturer Nordic Windpower has announced it is leaving California and relocating to Kansas City, Missouri - the heart of the nation's "wind corridor."

Only three years old, the company has delivered five turbines to customers this year alone and plans to increase production next year, especially as demand for alternative energy sources increases.

The company has been headquartered in Berkeley, with an assembly facility in Idaho and a technology office in the United Kingdom, according to the Silicon Valley Mercury News.

"Our product is fairly large - a wind turbine weighs 110 tons," said CEO Tom Carbone in an interview Tuesday. "So moving that equipment is a big part of the cost of any project. It will be great to be closer to our customers and great to have everybody in one place."

The Missouri government offered Nordic $5.6 million in incentives for the move. But the relocation reflects another trend among California businesses, as many flee the Golden State's regulatory network of high taxes.

Earlier this month, the office of Texas governor Rick Perry sent hundreds of letters to California businesses, imploring them to relocate their operations and incorporate in Texas.
