Recent business has painted the image of a hesitant economy, with declines in gross domestic product, jumps in small business hiring, slips in confidence and hikes in private lending.

But whether one plans to form an LLC in Arizona or a partnership in Florida, business owners and marketing professionals may want to review their promotional and managerial strategies in order to remain competitive.

For example, owners need to focus on the uniqueness of their products and services. Develop a unique selling point or "elevator pitch" that immediately sets your company apart from the industry.

Author and serial entrepreneur John Warrillow warns business owners not to define their job or business by its role within the industry. In contrast, view yourself as an exception.

"Service is in the eye of the beholder," Warrillow writes in Inc. magazine, "and until your prospect makes the decision to become a customer, intangible claims about how well you treat your customers ('offering great customer service since 1977,' 'specializing in great customer service') will not sway them."

Of course, this is only one aspect of business marketing and is more akin to an attitude shift. However, no matter how promising a product or marketing campaign is, knowing that your services are superior is paramount.
