In the towering field of skyscrapers that rise above New York City, one is apt to find enormously successful enterprises that range from social media consulting to investment banking to technology.
However, one of the more recent trends spurring New York LLC formation is that of social entrepreneurship, which refers to the growing class of professionals are applying their business management, financing and marketing skills toward humanitarian endeavors.
One such New York social venture is charity: water, a nonprofit that aims to provide underserved people and regions with access to clean drinking water. To date, the company has delivered clean water to 1 million people across 17 different countries, according to Inc. magazine.
But just like profit-driven entrepreneurship, establishing and maintaining a social venture is extremely difficult and time-consuming - perhaps even more so.
For Scott Harrison, founder of charity: water, it's about approaching the organization with a business mindset.
"I think of charity: water as a for-profit tech startup that has no profits," Harrison told Inc. "We give away 100 percent of our profits. So the better year we have, the more people around the world have access to clean water."
