As the economy continues its long crawl out of the recession, companies can expect to experience higher sales. In fact, a March survey by PNC Financial Services Group found 48 percent of small business owners expect sales to increase over the next six months - up from 42 percent last fall.
Whether or not a company is web-based - such as ecommerce sites - its website is a critical marketing and customer relations portal and will likely experience greater traffic as the economy grows and small businesses begin to expand.
However, a survey released this week by Neustar finds 73 percent of small to mid-sized companies' websites would not be able to handle a 200 percent jump in traffic, while as much as 93 percent would be unable to manage a 300 percent spike.
"Many small businesses, particularly those powered by online marketing and increasingly dependent on ecommerce, know they might see spikes in online traffic anytime, but they're not ready for it," said small business consultant and columnist Gene Marks.
In regions with high startup activity, such as New York City and California, this may pose an even greater obstacle. Because no startup wants to be confronted with a down website, entrepreneurs looking to form an LLC in New York state may want to consider ramping up their IT departments.
