In the fast-paced business universe of New York City, mobile phones - or, increasingly, smartphones - are everything. They are the means through which executives, entrepreneurs and investors hasten the financial activity that runs the city - and the country.

But a survey released last week gives new meaning to the role of mobile applications in business operations. According to the AT&T Small Business Technology Poll, 38 percent of surveyed small business owners claimed their companies could not survive without mobile apps, and as much as 72 percent claimed they use apps in their business.

"We expect adoption of these technologies to continue to increase in coming years, especially surrounding mobile apps and cloud services, so we'll remain focused on providing innovative solutions on these fronts going forward," said Lori Lee, AT&T senior vice president of small business marketing.

This week, the company announced it has reached a deal to purchase T-Mobile from parent company Deutsche Telekom AG for a combined $39 billion, pending regulatory approval.

As mobile technology continues to merge with computer technology, as evidenced by tablets and smartphones, many analysts are observing how these devices will continue to influence entrepreneurs looking to incorporate in New York City.
