According to a report that may vindicate free enterprise advocates who have been critical of the state's high tax and bloated regulatory environment, a large majority of companies in California believe their state is a more difficult place to do business.
Released last week, the survey by the California Foundation for Commerce and Education found 87.7 percent of executives claimed the state is a harder place to do business. And despite improving economic conditions nationwide, as much as 85 percent declared the state is headed in the wrong direction, up 8 percent from 2008.
"This assessment of California's business climate shows that the economy, burdensome regulations and the state budget crisis continue to weigh heavily on the minds of business owners," said Allan Zaremberg, president and CEO of the California Chamber. "Policy makers and elected officials must commit to the hard choices needed to create certainty for job creators so that California can turn things around."
The top three concerns among business executives were government regulation (57 percent), high taxes (30 percent) and the high cost of healthcare (24 percent). The state's massive $26.6 billion deficit followed with 21 percent stating it was a challenge to incorporating in California.
