Amid the backdrop of the state's massive budget crisis, a number of Texas small businesses met in San Antonio Thursday to list their grievances to the National Federation of Independent Business, reports San Antonio Express News.

Among chief concerns were high taxes, government waste and unfair or unnecessary regulations - all of which Will Newton, executive director of the NFIB's Texas branch, vowed to address with the incoming state legislature, which will convene next week.

"The needs are great and the dollars are few," Newton told the gathering of small businesses. "There is no doubt this is going to be one of the toughest sessions business owners will face."

However, Texas' massive $24 billion shortfall continues to loom over lawmakers and business owners alike, as a dearth of adequate revenue sources may force the state to reconsider its long tradition of minimal taxes.

The participating businesses also took issue with high unemployment insurance rates - a liability to incorporation in Texas that one area small business owner summed up by stating, "It's killing us."
