With the start of the new year and the inauguration of a number of newly elected state governors, the U.S. Southwest may shape up to be the country's hub for renewable energy ventures.
The recently elected governors of California and Arizona have both vowed to make their own states the leaders in green tech innovation and adoption.
Arizona governor Janice Brewer has vowed to develop a solar infrastructure that will become the "the envy of the world," according to the Solar Home & Business Journal.
Meanwhile, recently inaugurated California governor Jerry Brown has promised to move forward with the state's goal to reach a 33 percent renewables-based energy market by 2020 - a measure that is expected to ease conditions for green tech entrepreneurs seeking incorporation in California.
"As Californians we can be proud that our state leads the rest of the country in our commitment to new forms of energy and energy efficiency," the governor said in his inaugural address. "I have set a goal of 20,000 megawatts of renewable energy by 2020 and I intend to meet it by the appointments I make and the actions they take."
New Mexico, on the other hand, is not as forthright with its green energy ambitions, as newly elected governor Susana Martinez has promised to oppose the state's efforts to cap greenhouse gas emissions through a cap-and-trade program.
