It is true that global investment in clean energy technologies, startups and installations grew by an astounding 30 percent last year, but that sector reflects only one aspect of the green initiatives being implemented by businesses, consumers and governments.

In the private sector, many small companies are beginning to adopt more efficient practices as a result of environmental and social considerations.

Most of the strategies that small businesses can adopt are fairly simple, cost-saving practices such as purchasing compact fluorescent light bulbs, introducing recycling programs or more carefully regulating one's heat and cooling devices.

"Since heating and cooling are responsible for the majority of the costs found on utility bills, small businesses can save a bundle by improving efficiency," writes Inc. magazine. "The largest savings come from simply turning heat or air conditioning down at night or installing a programmable thermostat to regulate temperature."

For entrepreneurs looking to incorporate in California, energy consumption from renewable resources will become an increasingly obligatory task, as that state's recently passed AB 32 law calls upon utilities to achieve one-third of its energy from clean sources by 2020.
