This week is Global Entrepreneurship Week, a worldwide celebration of innovators and job creators hosted by the Kauffman Foundation. With a focus on driving global economic growth through startup and entrepreneurial activity, GEW arrives amid an otherwise uncertain marketplace.

In a column for the Washington Post, Finca International president and CEO Rupert Scofield argued that a global focus on innovation and entrepreneurship is the greatest weapon people have for boosting employment and lifting economies out of poverty.

According to a survey by the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor, there are nearly 250 million people involved in entrepreneurial ventures, with roughly 27 million of those individuals planning to hire more than 20 new workers over the next five years.

"Business entrepreneurship is only one part of the global equation," Scofield points out for the Post. "Social entrepreneurship - creating enterprises that exist to address social problems or to remedy 'market failures' - is just as important."

Scofield also offers some advice on how "social entrepreneurs" can improve their chances of success. He urges them to think creatively about problems, foster opportunities for young people, overcome fear and to not rely on the government to solve problems.
