Humboldt State University, home to one of several Small Business Development Centers in California, will join other California State University SMDCs in a new partnership to help spur entrepreneurship and small business growth in the Golden State.

CSU and HSU will collaborate to provide small business grant and contract applications, as well as student internships, faculty research programs and educational opportunities, all in an attempt to raise small business viability and entrepreneurship. HSU along with the five other SMDCs also hope to make it easier for entrepreneurs and business owners to file for an LLC in California.

"CSU campuses are hotbeds of innovation and vibrancy, which allow our centers easy access to research and talent," said Kristin Johnson, chair of HSU and regional director of the Northern California SBDC Lead Center. "We at Humboldt State understand the value of this type of relationship and have enjoyed many successes in programming and services for businesses that have cropped up from our SBDC/HSU collaboration."

As California's unemployment rate hovers at 12.2 percent, many are looking to small business growth as the key to improving the state's economy. Currently, small businesses employ more than half of all private sector employees - a statistic that has driven many recent initiatives designed to promote entrepreneurship and small company viability.
