In a move that reflects the growing role of social media marketing within the overall business landscape, American Express has announced alongside Twitter on Friday that the two companies will collaborate on a new small business advertising program.

While little information has been disclosed regarding what this ad platform may look like, insiders explained that it will involve Promoted Tweets and accounts. On Thursday night, Twitter's president of global revenue Adam Bain tweeted that the initiative will involve the social network's self-service advertising platform.

As for American Express' role in the initiative, the New York-based financial network reported on Thursday that it plans to give $100 in free Twitter advertising to the first 10,000 eligible businesses that register, which can be done at ads.twitter.com/amex. The advertising service is expected to open to the general public later this year.

"Small businesses were among the first to embrace Twitter as a way to connect and interact with consumers in real-time," said Dick Costolo, CEO of Twitter, in a statement. "Today, we're announcing a simple way for small businesses to amplify their voices on Twitter and reach a new set of potential customers using our Promoted Products."

As a private company, Twitter has not disclosed its advertising revenues, but eMarketer has estimated the figure will surpass $259 million this year.

While the role of advertising within the social landscape is seen as inevitable, it alludes to the rising influence of sites like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn within the global cultural and economic landscape. Some analysts tout the role of social media in organizing the Arba Spring protests of last year, and with Facebook's coming $10 billion IPO the sensation only seems to be mounting.

Of course, no one can tell exactly where the fledgling tech market is headed. Facebook is not even a decade old, yet it is expected to reach a landmark 1 billion members later this year. According to comScore, social networking sites now reach 82 percent of the world's internet population aged 15 and older.

For small businesses looking to form an LLC in New York, California, or wherever, this means unprecedented access to new customers from around the globe. As it is clearly difficult to compete with large competitors in a slow economy, efforts such as this may help to level the playing field.
