In an effort to secure his legacy as an advocate of green technology, California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has been pulling out all the stops to campaign against Proposition 23 - a bill that will repeal the governor's renewable energy law that requires the state to cut carbon emissions 25 percent by 2020.
Schwarzenegger has been active in involving oil executives as well as green tech entrepreneurs - calling fundraising events, engaging in social media and even lobbying Hollywood directors. However, the tone of the governor is determined as he puts a lot of blame on Washington for failing to launch a nationwide green tech revolution.
"We need to go to Washington and say, 'Look what happened: because the oil companies spent money against you and threatened you, you backed off on energy policy and environmental policy," he told ABC television. "What wimps! No guts!"
Many see the oil company-backed Proposition 23 as not so much an effort to curb unemployment - as the bill essentially calls for a halt to the renewable energy industry until unemployment reaches 5.5 percent - so much as an attempt to inhibit the green energy industry. According to the Guardian, California's unemployment rate has reached 5.5 percent only three times in the last forty years.
